DHAKA, June 6, 2026 — Marking World Environment Day 2026, the Department of Environmental Science (DOES) at Stamford University Bangladesh organized a colorful awareness rally and a tree-planting program on Saturday at the university campus.

The initiative aimed to raise awareness among students and the wider community about environmental conservation, sustainable development, and the growing challenges posed by climate change.

The program was presided over by Stamford University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Sharif Nafe As-Saber, while Agriculture Secretary Dr. Rafiqul I Mohamed attended as the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Rafiqul emphasized the vital role educational institutions play in protecting the environment. He said students should not limit themselves to textbook knowledge but must actively engage in addressing environmental challenges.

“The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly evident. Therefore, there is no alternative to environmental awareness and responsible behavior,” he said.

He further noted that the younger generation can make significant contributions to building a sustainable future by planting trees, using natural resources responsibly, and adopting environmentally friendly lifestyles.

The event was moderated by Professor Dr. Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder, Dean of the Faculty of Science. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Ms. Mahmuda Islam, Acting Chairperson of the Department of Environmental Science.

The university’s registrar, proctor, deans of various faculties, faculty members, and a large number of students also attended the program.

The day’s activities began with an awareness rally, during which participants carried banners and placards promoting environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable living.

A tree-planting campaign followed on the university premises, where several species of trees, including Jarul and Amla, were planted. University authorities said the initiative was undertaken to enhance campus greenery and foster an environmentally friendly learning environment.

In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Sharif Nafe As-Saber described the Earth as a shared home for all humanity. He stressed that everyone must contribute from their respective positions to support environmental protection and sustainable development.

He also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to transforming Stamford University Bangladesh into a “green campus.”
